Glossary of Auto Detailng Terms

  • Clay Bar Treatment - Process of removing overspray, oxidation and other contaminants from the clearcoat by using a special clay and lubricating solution.
  • Clearcoat -A clear layer sprayed over the paint as a final step to protect and beautify the underlying paint.
  • Extraction - A process used to deep clean carpets and upholstery using 210 degree solution and over 120 inches of vacuum lift.
  • Fabric Guard - Applied as a final step to freshly-cleaned upholstery to create a barrier against dirt and moisture.
  • Glaze - Wax-like protectant, less forgiving than a carnuba wax, with minimal masking ability. Provides a wetter looking surface. Not as durable as carnuba wax.
  • High-Speed Polish - Process of polishing the clearcoat using various compounds and polishing pads. Done using a high-speed polisher that rotates anywhere from 1000 to 4000 RPM. This is an aggressive approach for badly scratched clearcoats and/or vehicles that have been improperly maintained.
  • Leather Conditioning - Process of cleaning leather with a pH balanced cleaner to prevent staining and discoloration, followed by a rich protectant to keep the leather moisturized.
  • Micro-Scratches - Very light scratches in the clearcoat that appear almost swirl-like from a distance. These can be caused simply by washing the vehicle. A light polish removes this.
  • Overspray - Airborne paints or stains and even clearcoat spray, from a recent body shop visit that adhere to the clear coat, maybe hard to see but easily felt.
  • Oxidation - Build-up of fallout and small deposits of ferrous-oxide that affect the smoothness of the clearcoat. It is usually black or brown in color and can easily be seen on a white vehicle.
  • Paint Sealant - A synthetic wax-like protectant that provides a chain-link like barrier over your clearcoat. A wax will coat the surface and fill small voids, but a paint sealant lies on top of the surface and is more durable but has less shine.
  • Polish - Similar to a high-speed polish, but adds oscillation along with rotation by using a dual-head polisher. This allows a more finessed polish for autos not needing a high speed polish.
  • Wax - Clear coat protectant that is carnuba based, providing a rich luster along with minimal masking abilities for fine scratches; lasts longer than glaze, but not as durable as a synthetic paint sealant.
